“I have to accept this is it, this is my only chance to be happy and feel emotionally healthy. That’s something I wish more of us can get to.”

Huffington Post “Bachelor in Paradise” alum Colton Underwood is taking a very public, if not very dramatic, step to coming out of the closet.

The truth is, he’s been dealing with this for over two years and facing rejection from every single one of his exes.

“I’ve been open about this but there’s a reason that I’ve kept it to myself, it’s been a long road, it was rough to start, but I was able to get out of it and realize, okay this is who I am and this is what I feel like is worth sharing.”

Huffington Post’s David Roeder spoke to him exclusively about why he finally decided to go public with his sexuality.

“I know that ultimately what’s best for me and for my emotional health and my sense of identity is to come out of the closet publicly.”

The massive influx of fan interaction and various celebrities’ reactions is, of course, what encouraged Colton to finally make the decision. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of all the love and support and all the followers I have that I had before I went on this journey and every single one of them has tried to help me to get through this.”

This journey began when Underwood participated in season five of “The Bachelorette” where he was rejected by Andi Dorfman. Since then, he appeared on “The Bachelor” season 21 with Nick Viall and “Bachelor in Paradise” season four with his eventual winner, Cassie Randolph. The two are now together.

Underwood doesn’t know exactly what the future holds, but he’s certain it’s going to be positive. “I know that this is a chapter that I’m going to be writing for the rest of my life and I’m going to be working through this for a long time and I feel like that’s why I started coming out of the closet, because I want to make sure I’m getting out in front of this, because I feel like it’s a time when everyone, especially my generation, I’m tired of the judgment and the hate and that’s been it.”

You can keep track of him on “The Bachelor in Paradise: Finale Countdown” on ABC on Thursday September 12th at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
