Eighth grade basketball player was shot and killed at Memphis’ Middle College High School.

Students were not taking their normal lunch break when shots rang out.

Jordan Griffin, who attended Middle College, says he was standing near another class in the cafeteria when a bullet tore through his calf and abdomen.

“I thought I was shot. I didn’t know where I was. I thought I was in the hospital,” he said.

reports to be taking part in the law enforcement action.

Memphis Police Bureau Chief Patrick Kitchens said authorities are working with other law enforcement agencies in a joint operation, which will involve an overnight SWAT operation and a K-9 unit.

“There’s students we’re doing life saving procedures,” he said.

Officers are searching for five suspects.

“We have five individuals who are shooters involved,” Kitchens said. “We want to apprehend these individuals as quickly as possible. We can’t make sure they’re apprehended until we’re done with the operation.”

During the attack at around 12:30 p.m., students were asked to step out of a classroom during recess.

Some witnesses said the 15-year-old victim may have been targeted.

“I know he was telling them something about the shooter outside … and then the gunshots, I mean, he didn’t think nothing of it … he just ran and took cover,” Payton Mitchell, 15, told WMC.

He also said his classmate was shot in the leg.
