Is Israel a responsible actor on the international stage?

As US President Donald Trump is set to announce the United States pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal, Israeli’s have been stung by demands from some of the world’s biggest stars to consider a similar boycott of the country.

Rap superstar Tarell Alvin McCraney (whose stage work is described as a “relentless exploration of race, identity, dreams, and justice”) wrote an open letter for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) urging them to join a boycott of Israel.

Other notable names who have offered support to McCraney include the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and people of color activists from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova had also called on the international community to be aware of Israeli acts of racial violence and to stop using the “disproportionate” use of force against the Palestinian people

CAIR’s national executive director, Nihad Awad , said the Trump administration’s attempts to sever the US ties with Iran would only empower Israeli regime to continue abusing Palestinians.

“For years, the European Union made large concessions to Israel, including political, security, trade and security-related subsidies, in an effort to position itself as Israel’s West Bank trading partner,” Awad said in a statement.

The British Union of Jewish Students — which has recently campaigned against anti-Semitism — and members of the international Muslim community have also criticized Trump’s move.

Later this month, Australian iconess, Robert Herjavec , will appear on stage in London with his group, The Sharkettes, supported by the UK-based Bad Girls Touring Company, for a performance about Bali’s past, present and future.

Also up for the waters: long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, who has been planning a 65-mile swim from Cuba to Florida , without a shark cage, to raise awareness about global warming.

In 2014, Australia’s dual-citizenship migrant Scobie Cooper pulled out of the Melbourne Marathon in response to an anti-racism protest outside Melbourne’s racecourse by Black Lives Matter.

Sebastian Coe, who steered the London 2012 Olympics and Rio 2016 Olympics respectively, has also called for Israel to stand down from Olympic events. He wrote an op-ed for Israeli newspaper Haaretz this year.

In an interview with CNN’s Stuart Varney earlier this month, Ethiopian-born Grammy-winner, Dawoud Bey, revealed his identification with Israel’s national anthem, Hatikvah, and sang the song at a show to rally Israel supporters at London’s Roundhouse venue.

Bey told Varney he had been invited to sing the anthem due to his Israeli ancestors’ sacrifices.

In a letter to Trump this year, Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke took a different approach to his opposition to the president, advocating a boycott of “Jazz at the White House.”
