Two parents in Ontario have been charged with first-degree murder after their 17-month-old daughter died from ingesting drugs they had given her.

The girl was found unconscious in the family’s home in a small town in the country’s richheart in Ontario in September 2018.

She died in hospital in the provincial capital, Ottawa, shortly afterwards.

Her parents, Doug and Andrea Balsom, were both arrested at their home in Morley.

A third person is also under arrest.

Prosecutors did not name the alleged perpetrator, but the Toronto Sun said the toddler was named Rebecca Balsom and is the daughter of her father and his wife.

Prosecutor Stephen Fellig said the woman “possessed the requisite skills and history to knowingly give drugs to the child and then proceeded to ingest and ingest them”.

Police said the child had ingested the drug fentanyl, an opioid, which is 10,000 times more powerful than morphine.
